Our Finishes

We offer our products unfinished, or with a clear sealer, honey oak, or whitewash finish.

UNFINISHED

The solid wood we use (Radiata and Ponderosa Pine) is a light colored wood and a wood that takes a stain very well.  The unfinished product comes with a smooth sanded finish ready to stain.  If you wish to finish the product yourself or closely match an existing wood tone, you will be able to find samples of various stains on pine at your local hardware or paint store.  We suggest a penetrating oil stain (wiping stain) that soaks into the wood and hardens the grain.  In any case, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.  If you paint the product or coat it with an exterior surface finish, you will most likely alter the close tolerances of the product, making it difficult to set-up or adjust the shelves.  Of course once you have a configuration you want and do not intend to change it, then painting is an option, though a tedious one.

CLEAR SEALER FINISH

We use a penetrating oil base stain that soaks in and hardens the grain making the product more resistant to moisture and dirt.  The panels are dipped in the stain solution, allowed to partially dry, then excess stain is wiped off by hand and the panels are dried.  The clear sealer leaves the product light in color, giving it a blond tone.  You can always use furniture polish for additional beauty and protection.

HONEY OAK FINISH

The honey oak finish (sometimes called a golden oak finish) utilizes the same penetrating oil base finish with a pigment added for the tone.  The panels are dipped, wiped down, and dried just as with the clear sealer finish above.  The honey oak (our most popular finish) gives the product a rich medium brown tone finish.  Again, you can use furniture polish for additional protection.

WHITEWASH FINISH

We double dip our whitewashed products giving a more complete white finish than most whitewashed products commonly seen.  The finish is permanent and does not wipe off like much of the whitewash you see on other products.  Some wood grain, though not much, does show through.

If you would like to closely match a white finish or wood tone stain you already have, we suggest you buy the unfinished.  However, if you would like a light wood finish (clear sealer) or a medium brown tone finish (honey oak), then you will probably be completely satisfied with our finishes.  For the dark walnut and mahogany finishes, you will need to start with the unfinished product.

Due to the differences in color presentation on computer screens, and because the pictures on our website were taken at different times and under different conditions, the finishes shown throughout the site may vary.  Below we have tried to accurately show the finishes.
